Last night Doc Delts and I went to the gym pretty late. I got there after he did, and was greeted by an amazing sight. There was Delts doing bench presses, but there was some V-shaped contraption between his knees, and he was squeezing it. Blinking twice, I went over there to see what was going on. He was mid-rep, but smiled and managed to say “hey”.
I didn’t want to lay into him just yet, knowing that distracting him could cause an injury. He finished the set, a bit out of breath.
“What are you doing? ” I asked.
“Hey Dude, I heard some guy the other say he uses multi-angle training. He’s pretty huge, so I thought I’d give it a try.”
I suddenly realized what was going on. Delts cannot resist buying exercise equipment. His place is essentially furnished with every imaginable exercise device. A couple months ago he had said that he found a Thighmaster on Ebay for 5 bucks. This must have been it.
“Delts, are you kidding me? Doing Thighmaster reps during your bench press workout is not multi-angle training.”
“Well, I am using two angles at once, and it did get my heart rate way up. I also thought it would save time.”
I had to admit to myself that it was true in a way. “Yeah, but when Macho Man uses multi-angle training, he is exercising a muscle from two different angles, with two different exercises.”
“Huh. OK,” he replied.
“Let’s pick an exercise,” I explained. “You’re a bench-aholic. So let’s say you do a set of those. Then for the next set, you do an Incline Bench Press. The second exercise hits the shoulder and chest muscles from a different angle, so you’re not just strong in one direction, and the whole area can be stronger than if you only do your presses one way.”
“Oh yeah, I’ve already been doing it!” Delts said. And he sure has, he’s extremely strong.
“So let’s hide that thing before anyone else sees it, or we can tell people it’s a hand grip trainer”, I advised.
He nodded in assent, and smiled broadly to a lady working out nearby before putting the Thighmaster out of sight and beginning his next set of benches. At least he only blew 5 bucks this time.
