I’m lucky to be very self-disciplined, and have trained on my own for years. But many people enjoy having workout partners, and now I occasionally have company on my workouts. Doctor Delts, my favorite workout partner, is not your typical doctor, but more of a doctor of distractibility, and a kind of physician of flirtatiousness. We get along great even though his personality and workout style are quite different from mine. After having gone through a stage of doing a whole lot of pressing exercises, he has developed the shoulders that gave him his nickname.
Four Gyms in One Day
Delts is extremely enthusiastic, but not overly patient. Just last Wednesday, I met up with him at our favorite park for an outdoor workout. He had gotten there before me, and was beaming with pride as he held a small woman in the air. Though she looked a little concerned, she seemed to be taking being mildly airborne surprisingly well, and even smiling a little. He does have a certain mischievous charm. After he set her down and flirted with her a bit, she left. He excitedly told me that he’d joined four gyms. He is not independently wealthy, and I asked him how he was planning to pay for it. He paused and frowned, and then shrugged, “I’m not… really sure about that. But I’m thinking I can just try ’em, and I’ll quit the ones I don’t like, right? They all sounded pretty good”.
“Did you sign contracts?” I asked.
“Well, yeah, sort of”.
“Oh oh. Were all the salespeople attractive women? ”
“Yeah, they were,” he said, as if surprised.
I smiled. My friend had done it again. Oh well, maybe he can work for them part-time or barter some of those many unused workout gizmos he has. I have asked him to run things by me once in awhile, but he’s a “right here, right now” type of guy. That drives me nuts at times, but he makes up for it in other ways. He’s loyal almost to a fault. One day we were having a drink in a bar, and for no clear reason, a guy took a poke at me. Almost before I could react, Delts was all over the guy, and if I hadn’t talked him out of it, he may have broken the guy up into kindling.
When it comes to working out, he likes variety, and lots of it. He is bugging me to let him write some training articles here. At first I turned him down flat – I’d never even seen him write. But maybe having someone else writing here might be fun and be refreshing. Or we can just write it together. I’ll see what he comes up with.
Author’s Note – I’m doing an experiment here, fictionalizing composites of fitness people I’ve known and seen. If you find it fun, please visit again for the next installment or subscribe by RSS above. You can also leave a comment below. Thanks for reading, and enjoy your workouts!
